Hello Breast Friend,
So happy you’re here! I hope this note finds you well! I want to share something close to our hearts – breast health. It’s something we don’t talk about enough, but it’s so important. Monthly breast self-exams are a simple way to stay in tune with your body, and we’d like to walk you through how to do it. Think of this as a little love note from us to you, all about taking care of yourself.
Why Monthly Breast Self-Exams Matter
You know your body better than anyone else. They’re not about being paranoid – they’re about feeling empowered. By checking in with yourself each month, you’ll know what’s normal for you and can catch anything unusual early.
When’s the Best Time?
If you have periods, the best time is a few days after your cycle ends when your breasts aren’t tender or swollen. If you don’t have periods anymore, pick an easy-to-remember date, like the first of the month.
Here’s How to Do It
Getting to know your normal is quick and simple—faster than a facemask! Let’s break it down into three easy steps.
1. Look in front of a mirror with your arms at your sides.
Look for any changes in your breasts and nipples.
2. Move
- Raise your arms, placing your hands on your waist and clasped behind your head. Look for the same changes.
- Tip: Turn your body left and right to view different angles; this helps you spot things you might otherwise miss.
3. Feel for lumps.
- Place your left hand behind your head. With the pads of your right hand’s 3 middle fingers, apply firm pressure in small circular motions on your left breast.
- Start at the nipple and spiral outward to cover the entire breast, armpit, and area under the collarbone. Repeat on the right breast.
- Finally squeeze each nipple to check for discharge.
What Are You Looking For?
Keep an eye (and hand!) out for:
- Lumps or thickened spots
- Unusual tenderness
- Change in shape or size of your breasts or nipples
- Skin changes (rash, redness, visible building, dimpling, or puckering of the skin)
- Unusual nipple discharge
Not every change is cause for concern—most are harmless. But if something doesn’t feel or look right, promise us you’ll check in with your doctor, okay?
Making It a Routine
I get it – life gets busy. But if you can make this a monthly habit, it becomes just another part of your self-care routine, just like your daily skincare. Think of it as a mini spa day, but for your health.
Bust Some Myths
I know self-exams can feel intimidating, so let’s clear a few things up:
Myth No.1: If I feel a lump, it’s cancer.
Nope! Most lumps aren’t serious, but they should still be checked.
Myth No. 2: I’m scared I’ll do it wrong.
Don’t worry! The important thing is just doing it. The more you practise, the more confident you’ll feel.
